Creole Zydeco Farmers Colorado Friends of Cajun-Zydeco Music & Dance Friday, February 12, 2010 D-Note Night Club Cost: $15.00 The non-profit organization Colorado Friends of Cajun-Zydeco Music and Dance and the D-Note celebrate Mardi Gras early with an evening of ultimate old school zydeco featuring the Creole Zydeco Farmers on Friday, February 12, 2010. In the spirit of Mardi Gras, there will be a contest for best costume, so mask up and get ready to revel! The name Creole Zydeco Farmers is a play on words reference to the etymology of the word 'zydeco.' Literally derived from the French Creole phrase 'Les Háricots sont pas salé,' meaning the snap beans aren't salty, the Creole Zydeco Farmers' Jockey Etienne realized that everyone talked about snap beans but no one grew it. Hence the namesake − one of the most colorful ever − and the Creole Zydeco Farmers have been growing strong since sprouting in 1990. Helmed by drummer Etienne - the recipient of Off Beat magazine's 2008 Living Legend award - the Creole Zydeco Farmers play an intoxicating brew of zydeco, blues, R&B and swamp pop. While the nouveau zydeco movement positions itself to be aligned with mainstream rap and hip-hop, the Farmers, like all good farmers, stay close to the roots. They play the time-honored music that was initially seeded by zydeco innovator Clifton Chenier and the old adage 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' certainly applies here. Obviously, they're doing something right. They've circled the globe, Brazil, Europe and various outposts in between. They've even appeared on ESPN2 and their radio hit "Pay Your Bills" has become a staple in the zydeco kingdom. Furthermore, the Creole Zydeco Farmers are healthy outcroppings of their fertile Southwest Louisiana musical soil. In the late 50s, Etienne played on the famed Excello sessions behind such legends Katie Webster, Carol Fran, Lazy Lester and Lonesome Sundown. Remember Slim Harpo's immortal hit "Scratch My Back"? Heating the beat on that record was none other than Etienne. But history aside, what matters most is everyone having a good time at a Farmers gig. "We just look into the crowd and figure out what will please them," says the venerable drummer. "And so far, so good."
