the Los Angles area and here in Colorado. Come hear about
these important roadway subjects and what to do to prevent or
report them.
Sept 5 - No meeting
Sept 12 - Celtic, American, and Old Time Country
Music by Loretta Thompson
Loretta is known for her dynamic fiddling and radiant voice.
She's passionate about the music of her Scottish-Irish and American
heritage, as well as traditional music and dance. Besides fiddling
and singing, she also plays guitar, whistles, and entertains
her audiences with unforgettable melodies and toe-tapping jigs
and reels.
She's been featured for many years at local, state, and national
Scottish and Irish gatherings, Celtic Festivals, and in concerts
with other Celtic entertainers. Loretta has experience as a public
school orchestra director, music teacher, and is a member of
the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra. She majored in music education
and conducting at Metro State College and has been an instructor
at the Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp since its inception in 1999.
Currently she composes music, teaches privately, and conducts
two music groups - Summit Middle School Celtic music group and
the Colorado Chinese Language School Orchestra.
Sep 19 - "Thinking Outside the Planet" by
Jeff Peckman
Jeff will ask us "Are you ready to 'meet and greet' people
from other planets?" He'll explain how "thinking outside
the planet" can improve the economy and healthcare, as well
as create clean energy. Jeff has been interviewed about UFOs
and extraterrestrial visitors by Larry King, Geraldo, and even
David Letterman.
He is well known as a UFO disclosure activist, columnist for Examiner.com,
and even as a political candidate for the Natural Law Party.
His ballot initiative to create an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission
has been certified by the Denver Elections Division and is currently
scheduled for the August 2010 ballot. Jeff's presentation promises
to be fun, fascinating, perhaps comforting, and certainly "out
of this world".
Sept 26 - Long Term Care Planning by Trish Fisher
Are you wondering if a Long Term Care Plan is appropriate for
you? Trish will educate us about why you may need this coverage,
the various features to consider, and related costs. She is an
Associate Partner in LTC Financial Partners and is a Representative
for Colorado PERA members (primarily teachers). Barb and Kent
recommended her as doing a great job in educating them about
the subject. Trish will answer any questions you may have and
even do individual consultations.
Oct 3 - Easter Seals Warm Water Therapy Pool
by Stacy Lochowicz
This pool at 5755 W Alameda (at Harlan) in Lakewood is for people
of all ages and abilities. Exercising in water is better than
exercising out of water because of buoyancy (easier to do exercises
with no jarring or pounding) and resistance (continual,12-14%
more than on land, and no sudden body movements).
The warm water decreases pain, increases joint mobility and muscle
flexibility, improves endurance and muscle strength and tone,
improves circulation and respiration, and fosters relaxation
and social interaction leading to better mental health. The pool
is kept at 91 to 93 degrees, uses bromine (no chlorine), has
a depth of only one to four feet (ideal for water walking), includes
Jacuzzi jets, has trained staff to help, and the usage rates
are reasonable. They have hours for open swimming plus scheduled
classes, including some for us older folks.
Oct 10 - Body Jet Liposuction by Doctors Ken
Petri & Clark Zimmerman of Body Solutions
Hove you ever wondered about this cosmetic surgery and its use
to reshape bodies? These two doctors claim their water assisted
procedure makes other liposuction approaches obsolete: there
is little, if any blood loss or bruising, faster recovery (usually
1-2 days), and the fat cells can be used for natural breast augmentation
and rejuvenation of the face and hands. The results are smooth,
natural, and permanent, aside from normal aging. That's better
than repeated Botox or Juviderm treatments.
Oct 17 - "Because Average Sucks" by
Chris Howlett
Chris is an INSTIGATOR by profession. His purpose is to uncover
client's obstacles by giving perspective, setting immediate and
long term goals, and developing action plans. He focuses specifically
on the areas of fitness, finance, and lifestyle. As a coach,
he claims the best experience is to learn from someone else's
successes.
As an accountability coach, he will happily push you out of your
comfort zone and challenge your limits. Living by example, Chris
has started several businesses, purchased foreclosed real estate,
been a landlord, built websites, had careers in sales and marketing,
and finished several marathons, as well as century (100 mile)
bike races, and Ironman distance triathlons. He recently competed
in his first natural body-building competition and published
his first book. His motto is "Remember: Life doesn't reward
the timid - BE BOLD".
Oct 24 - Courtesy Boot Camp by "Colonel" Klinkerman
Come enjoy this playful presentation on the rewards of good manners
by Anthonette Klinkerman. Chief Etiquette Officer (CEO) "Colonel" Klinkerman
is a small business owner, educator, and writer. The cotillion
classes she took as a sixth grader, under the imposing watch
of Mr Benjamin, left an lasting impression on her.
She says that most etiquette books are intimidating in their size
alone, and even the "Colonel" cannot absorb all the
information they contain. However, she does know how and where
to look should she need to know how to dine with royalty. It
is her hope to encourage the more conscious practice of manners
and civility.
Oct 31 - Halloween Costume Party (No
Speaker)
Costumes are optional, but encouraged. We'll start out with a
potluck dinner of Halloween food items, the scarier the better,
so be thinking of how you can modify some food items for the
holiday. There will prizes for the best costumes in various categories
and also for the potluck items. Of course there will be decorations
and music. Then we'll play some Bingo for spooky prizes.
Nov 7 - Club Fundraiser Auction (No Speaker)
Please join us for one of the favorite events of the year and
help the club continue to remain financially sound. It costs
a lot for the rental of the hall, food, and speakers each
week, so we need additional funds to continue to operate
without raisng the dues or door fees. Some of the funds also
help supplement the annual dinner/dance.
Be sure to bring your donated items (baked goods, services, dining,
plays, useful items, etc) to the club either before (preferably)
this evening. Also be sure to bring plenty of cash or checks
for the purchases you make. Perhaps you'll even pick up some
gift items for the holidays.
Nov 14 - Hearing Aids by Kayce Kremer (Tentative)
Want to learn all about hearing aids and the advancements that
make wearing them even easier and more comfortable? Kayce is
Board Certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences and works for
Affordable Hearing Centers located at 2310 Kipling in Lakewood.
It's a family owned business that has operated in the Denver
area for over 15 years.
They have state-of-the-art instruments, equipment, and testing
procedures. Besides hearing tests they offer evaluation and fitting,
video otoscopy of the ear canal and tympanic membrane, as well
as batteries and repairs and maintenance. Do you hear me now?
Nov 21 - Thanksgiving Dinner (No Speaker)
This is always one of the best feasts of the year. We'll have
turkey with all the trimmings, as well as delicious side dishes
and desserts. Each course is presented in progressive dinner
style, rotating tables to share the delicious morsels and conversation
with many members and guests. We're sure you'll leave the evening
happily stuffed.
Nov 28 - Al Capone and Other Gangsters (Tentative)
Details to follow.
Dec 5 - "This is Your Life" June Hyna
Come help celebrate June's 80th birthday (actually on Dec 15th).
June has been a member of our club for many years and still
acts younger than a lot of us. She's very active in many
things, so this should be an interesting evening with lots
of good stories. You may even want to take part in this special "roast" of
a very special lady. June's Mom lived to be 100, so June
probably has many more birthdays to celebrate with us.
Dec 12, 5:30 pm to 10 pm - Holiday Dinner/Dance
at West Woods Golf Club,
6655 Quaker St, Arvada.
Reservations required by Mon, Dec 6.
No meeting at Clements Community Center this evening.
Come enjoy a great evening of delicious food, cash bar, conversation,
and dancing to a wide variety of music. Dressy or cocktail attire
is suggested, as this is a very special social event. Food prices
have gone up significantly since last year, so the cost is $40
for both members and guests. However, members will receive a
small rebate at the event. Please let us know you'll be joining
us by Mon, Dec 6th, so West Woods can plan accordingly.
Dec 19 - White Elephant Gift Exchange (No
Speaker)
This is traditionally the most popular meeting of the year. Be
sure to bring a wrapped gift - something you don't really need,
but still worthwhile to someone else. Some gifts are funny, others
are practical, and still others have no classification whatsoever.
Several well-known gifts seem to show up every year and add to
the fun. You'll get a number at the door and gifts are chosen
in that sequence. If you don't care for the gift you open, you
are allowed to steal from others that are already opened. Each
gift is allowed to be stolen only a certain number of times,
but this results in lots of laughs and "bargaining".
Dec 26 - Legends of the Totem Pole by Marty
Youngman
Marty has given us two previous slide shows (one on Britain and
one on railroads) and returns for another interesting program.
Marty has been a photographer for over sixty years, starting
out as a student and then an instructor in the Army Air Corps
Photography School. He went on to study basic photography and
technique at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and College of DuPage
in Illinois.
Marty converts his photos into PowerPoint for his presentations
and loves to show his passion for travel, nature, and wild flowers.
Since 1986 he has taught basic photography in the North Jeffco
Parks and Recreation District and enjoys teaching students of
all ages.
